The alternator is a simple but essential component. It produces electricity for your Honda using induction. An alternator is a relatively long-lived part and will generally last for 80,000 to 150,000 miles. It can, however, be damaged by the failure of other engine components. If your alternator starts to fail, our Honda dealer can perform an alternator repair for you. These are a few signs that your alternator may be failing.

3 Signs You Need an Alternator Repair at Your Honda Dealer

Stalling Problems

Stalling is caused by two or more cylinders failing to complete the combustion process. There are several possible reasons for this, but one of the most common is the lack of sufficient power to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders. The alternator is responsible for producing electrical power, and the first step is to check its condition.
When an alternator gets older, it produces less electricity. The lack of available power will eventually affect all your Honda’s electrical systems. The spark plugs are a priority system and should usually always receive power. The electricity supply to the spark plugs can become intermittent due to the damaged alternator, and the lack of consistent power will cause your car to stall. Replacing the worn alternator will solve this problem.

Battery Warning Light

The numerous warning lights on your dash allow you to see the health of your car’s systems at a glance. If the battery warning light illuminates, this signals a problem in the electrical system. The warning light comes on in response to warnings from the sensors in the electrical system that something is going wrong. Your car’s computer will log the fault and illuminate the light.
The alternator might not trigger the warning light. The light will also illuminate in response to a failing battery, damaged wiring, or other electrical problems. We’ll connect your car’s computer to our diagnostic system to identify the exact problem. We can repair damaged wiring and repair or replace the alternator, depending on the cause of the problem. If your battery is damaged, we’ll replace it with a new one.

Flickering Lights

If your lights start to flicker, they could be wearing out, or they could be signaling a problem with the alternator. Headlights are sensitive to fluctuations in the electrical system. They require a constant and consistent supply of electricity to work effectively. As we’ve seen, a failing alternator can’t supply all the electricity it once provided.
Your Honda’s computer will have to manage the available electricity supply, and power is shifted from component to component depending on their electricity demands. The lack of consistent power will cause your headlights to flicker. Our technicians will test the alternator and replace it if needed.
